I must admit that although I love to dance, I always felt like I was terrible at it. It would often take a couple glasses of wine for me to even step onto a dance floor. I always envied people who were able to dance to the rhythm of any song and do it with ease. I love to run but I am always looking for new ways to stay active. Michelle’s Zumba class was a totally new experience for me but being new to the area, I took this opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone and meet new people while I’m at it.
I really appreciated that the first class is free, which is great because it allows you to test out the class without the long-term commitment, just to make sure it’s the right fit for you. This was so important to me because I had never done Zumba before and with a handful of injuries, I didn’t know how my body would respond to it. Michelle was very considerate about giving advice prior to performing certain moves and including modifications for people like me who have restrictions in their movement. She would begin by showing us what to expect and then would follow it up with stating that if you have a bad back or knees, try this instead! She definitely made me feel comfortable when I physically could not do certain things and I was excited that I wasn’t the only one using the modifications that were shown. She is great at explaining new moves and giving water breaks when she senses we need it. She also has steps that vary in difficulty. Some you master right away (it makes you feel like you are a Zumba superstar) and others take time and practice but eventually when you get them down, your confidence goes through the roof. The class is fun, friendly and the dance moves make you feel a little flirty. You lose sight of the fact that you are exercising because you are having such a good time doing it. Everyone participating in this class vary in age and experience but there is no judgement. The first class many people came up to me and said don’t worry we all started in the same boat as you, just have fun. Michelle made sure to emphasize this too. I let go of my inhibitions and had a blast! Over all, my experience with Michelle’s class has been nothing but amazing. I look forward to it each week and finally feel like I am learning some new moves that I can take to the dance floor. I am so disappointed that I won’t be able to make it out this week because of my ankle but if you have the chance to go, definitely try it out. After all, you have nothing to lose. Hopefully I will be back on my feet next week and I will see some of you there!
